Today I received an email asking about what the Address Book option is using bluetooth and iPhone. So here's what I found out.

Required:

  • Mobile Phone with bluetooth, iPhone doesnt work yet :(
  • Mac with bluetooth
  • OS X installed (10.4 Tiger shown here) with Address Book (comes with OS X)

iPhone not yet supported...

What can you do with Address Book and a mobile phone over bluetooth?

If you click on the text "Mobile telephone number" on a contact, you get a menu with options like:

  • Call using Mobile Phone
  • Send SMS
  • Caller ID with a warning on your Mac when someone calls with 3 options. You can either answer the call directly, send them to voice mail, or send an SMS.

Step one: Pairing the Phone with you Mac.

See this article on using the Bluetooth Setup Assistant to pair you iPhone with your Mac.

Step two: Setup Address Book to use Bluetooth.

Notice the icon at the top left with the Bluetooth logo? Click it :)

Find your mobile phone in the list...

Enter your password:

address book and bluetooth password

I used "0000" and it appears to be connected.

I noticed that the Bluetooth logo at the top has a blue halo around it...

But I never was prompted to enter "0000" on my iPhone...
