I call it aftermath, due to the issues I am having after installing 3.0

iPhone 3.0 day

Wednesday, June 17th was a long day here in Norway.

Apple released the new iPhone 3.0 update here at 7pm. I waited all day for the folks at Apple to wake up and turn on the servers.

Upgrade problems

I started the updating process around 9pm after coming home from Rugby training.

  1. Plugged in the iPhone to my MacBook Pro
  2. iTunes fired up as normal and I clicked on the Check for Updates button. The new version 3.0 was available!
  3. So I started the download, which was a large 600MB file or so, it took about 20min on my slow cable modem/wireless network connection.
  4. After the download was completed, I started the update process, which does a complete backup of the iPhone first before installing anything.
  5. PROBLEM #1, BUSY SIGNAL: After the backup, was a call to the Apple Store for some verification, but gave me an error message. So I tried again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again.

The FIX: Patience. On about the 7th or 8th retry, I was accepted in line to start the update.

My take: I guess having 20 million people around the world updating at the same time is a bad idea? Why not do this on a global scale on timezones? Available at 12 o'clock noon in you timezone. You can make a magic phone, this availability issue couldn't be that tough.
  6. PROBLEM #2, STUCK IN VERIFICATION-LAND: During the verification process, which should take about 30 seconds or so, I noticed it wasn't quite done after 5min. Then after 20min. So I tried not to panic.

The FIX: I came up with the idea of disabling Airport (Wireless LAN) to get an error hopefully to move the process along. Well that seemed to be good enough, it went on through and finished the upgrade.

The reason: I think it had to do with the fact that I wasn't logged into iTunes Store. It probably would have gone right through otherwise. Weird that it never prompted with a dialog box, just hung there.
  7. SIM CARD PIN + CONNECT: I noticed that after the final restart, the iPhone was turning on and showed 2 things at the same time. First the SIM CARD PIN code needed to be typed in as expected, but not the image that shows you need to plug in the iPhone to iTunes again. It was plugged in, what the hell? So again I tried not to panic.

The FIX: I just unplugged the iPhone, and plugged it back in and got the message about sucessfully installed. Whew!

Native App and Settings Problems

Wireless LAN - gateway server problem.

Here at our office we have a wireless network that allows you access to the router, but requires a username/password on a gateway page before accessing the Internet. (Very common)

After upgrading to 3.0, I tried to connect to the Wireless LAN with no luck.

PROBLEM: This login windows sometimes crashes and the connection is lost. Under the Wi-Fi Settings when manually connecting to a network, it will noticed the gateway page and open it up in its own window.

FIX / CAUSE: After mulitple restarts to find out what is going on, I thought it had to do with having bluetooth connected at the same time, but nope everything is now working after a restart. Weird.
