Looking for the best way to stream music from Home network to my iPhone

I was talking to a friend about how it would be awesome to store all the music on the local network at home, and just stream it to the iPhone.







I did a little search on Google for "iphone music from home network" and came up a few sites that had some good information.

So what was the conclusion?

I am not sure yet. Need to keep digging.

 

The first result came from lifehacker.com with this article:

The article discusses a few alternatives.

  1. Sonos Bundle 150 for $1000 you can use remote controls to play different music in different locations around the house. Maybe this would be cool if I had kids or lived in a mansion with all of my friends.
  2. iPhone or iPod Touch, Linksys WRT54GL Router, Apple Airport Express $100, Ethernet cable, Headphone to RCA cable. BUT it looks like you have to Hack your router firmware to use Tomato to get a WDS feature

 

I guess what I thought was kinda cool, actually is not all that cool.

Most of these sites I found from the Google search are talking about streaming your music over the internet back to your iPhone where ever you happen to be :)

So I took a look at an app from the app store that had some promise.

Simplify Media

Download the Client for Windows, Mac or Linux first.

Create an account on their server.

Download the App for iPhone and log in using the same account info.

You can also invite others, chat and play their music...

It allow for up to 30 machines/friends and can use any music player/format.

So what's the verdict? Hmm still looking...

  1. Since its not the iPod app, it doesn't run in the backgorund (hit the home button, and the music stops)
  2. It will run while the screen is turned off, which is kinda cool
  3. You have to have the Simplify app running on the "library" computer
  4. That means you have to have a computer running at all times :(
  5. No album covers or coverflow, but has artist info and lyrics... almost better in a way :)

So what am I looking for?

What would be great is the iPod app with a way to search for music on lets say an external usb or network drive connected to the home router.
