Last night my girlfriend bought a iPhone 3G at SpaceWorld in Levanger, Norway. She upgraded her SIM card to 3G at the same time. Little did we know the trouble that layed ahead.

LONG STORY SHORT - ITS THE SIM CARD NOT YOUR IPHONE

Read on for the rest of the story...

Tech Support call...

Today I got a phone call from my girlfriend and she was pissed off.

"This thing is a peice of sh*t."

So I laughed and thought, ok this should be fun.

"Ok dear, what's the trouble?"

"Everyone that calls me comes up "Uknown" in this stupid phone!"

hmm...

1. WRONG NUMBER?
First thing I thought of was the +47 or 0047 issue which is the Country Code for Norway. I thought maybe that was it. Nope.

2. SYNCHING?
Ok, well first thing she did was sync from her old phone (Sony Ericsson w880i) to the new 3G SIM card and then we put that into the iPhone and did a sync to her iPhone Contacts. So, delete my contact info and add it in manually. Tried, called, Nope.

3. SYNCHING?
Ok, how about the iTunes 8.0 / Windows Vista Contact synching? What number do you have there in Windows Contacts? No numbers at all... AH HA!
But... hmm... if

  1. adding the contact manually and
  2. changing around the +47 and/or 0047 didn't work

This might be a iPhone issue.

4. FIRMWARE?
The iPhone came with version 2.2 on it, so we tried to do and update to 2.2.1... but...
WARNING: Using iTunes on Windows Vista did not allow us to update to 2.2.1

5. FIRMWARE - Round 2
On my way back to work we took the iPhone and hooked it up to my MacMini to try the update. Worked just fine, and she now has verion 2.2.1 :) So did that fix it? Nope.

6. SIM CARD SWAP - IS IT THE IPHONE?
So before doing a restore in iTunes we decided to swap SIM cards between my iPhone 3G 2.2.1 and hers. My SIM card worked fine in her iPhone, but hers came up with "Uknown" using my iPhone. ITS NOT THE FUC*ING IPHONE :)

7. CALL YOUR PHONE COMPANY
We noticed on MY iPhone that under Settings > Phone > Show My Caller ID was switched on,
while on HER iPhone that this option was greyed out and not available.

We ended up calling NetCom at 05050 and getting telling them about the issue, they flipped a switch in the system, and the phone works as advertised.

My Girlfriend loves her new phone again.
