This is a question a lot of people are asking. I did a search and here's how I managed to make my own ringtones.

Note: This does not work with DRM or protected files.

1. Open up iTunes and find the song you want to use as the ringtone

2. Right-click on the song and select Get Info

3. Under the Options tab, select the check box next to start and stop times

4. Add between 15-40 seconds in the start and stop times, can be from anywhere you want in the song.

5. Select OK when you are finished

6. Highlight the song in the list and in the iTunes menu at the top select Advanced > Create AAC Version

7. It appears in the iTunes library as the same file name but only 15-40 seconds long.

8. Go back into the Get Info options on the original song and uncheck the start and stop times so it will play normally.

9. Drag-n-drop the new ringtone file to the desktop.

If you own a Mac

10. Go to the desktop and rename the file by changing the extention from .m4a to .m4r

If you own a PC running Vista

10. Go into Control Panel > Appearance and Personalizations

11. Under Folder Options on the View tab, uncheck the "Hide extensions for known file types"

12. Click on Use and OK

13. Go to the desktop and rename the file by changing the extention from .m4a to .m4r

MAC and PC

14. In iTunes delete the ringtone from the default library, not from the computer

15. Then drag the new .m4r file back into iTunes on the left side panel on the link for Library.
