How easy is it to replace the glass display on an iPhone? How much does it cost to replace your broken iPhone display? I found out the hard way, but it's not really all that bad.

A broken iPhone 3G

My girlfriend came home one day almost in tears because she dropped her iPhone 3G on its face and cracked the glass display.

iPhone 3G repair - It was dropped on its face... smack! crunch!

After consolling her and doing a quick search, I found some YouTube videos on how to get a new display put in place.

It's not a difficult job to do... just takes time.

The Layers inside the iPhone Display

  • The Frame
  • The Glass Display
  • The LCD

The Frame and the broken Glass Display, which is held in place with Double-sided tape.

iPhone 3G repair - Fitting the LCD to the glass front.

The LCD is attached to the Frame by 6 tiny, tiny, tiny screws.

So really... it's not too hard of a job and I found the parts really cheap.

The Repair

Take a look at my Flickr Photo Gallery to get an idea of how the iPhone 3G comes apart. Be very gentle, and don't force things. It comes apart easily if you take your time.
