I was checking my facebook profile, when a message popped up about facebook usernames for both profiles and pages. Now the URL to my facebook profile or page can have my real name or company name.
First come first sever basis
From the facebook blog:
Starting at 12:01 a.m. EDT on Saturday, June 13, you'll be able to choose a username on a first-come, first-serve basis for your profile and the Facebook Pages that you administer by visiting www.facebook.com/username/. You'll also see a notice on your home page with instructions for obtaining your username at that time.
Eliminate "sqatters"
From the facebook help section on Pages:
At this time, generic words are not available as usernames. Facebook encourages all users and Page administrators to create a username that closely matches the true identity of their name or business.
Add names for all pages you administer
If you are an administrator of a Facebook Page, you will be able to choose your username at facebook.com/username just like a user selecting a username for their profile.
If you are an administrator of mulitple Pages, you will be able to choose a username for each Page at http://www.facebook.com. There will be an interface for you to choose usernames for the Facebook Pages you administer.
Usernames will be a one-time deal
Think carefully about the username you choose. Once it's been selected, you won't be able to change or transfer it
So what does this mean?
- Better results in Google
- Easy to remember URLs help people find you easier
