A successful unlocking of a iPhone 2G after 3 hours of no signal, finding out why and hoping that I didn't just "brick" it.

Friday project at work

It's friday at work, which means I like to find myself a nerdy/geeky project, instead of actual work like sending out invoices :)

At lunch I was talking to a co-worker about her old iPhone 2G from 2007, and how she wanted to use MMS.

I told her we should update her phone to the latest version. And so it began...

Fact: Updating an iPhone 2G to the latest iPhone OS 3.1.2 will not give you MMS

(after installing the OS update, and then researching why things aren't working)

Anyone interested in how I got the phone unlocked and working on NetCom's network here in Norway, read on.

Disclaimer: Unlocking or Jailbreaking your iPhone voids the warranty. Do not do it unless you understand that this could turn your phone into an expensive iPod or it could never boot up again, rendering it useless.

Additional info: The iPhone 2G was never sold in Norway. This phone I had was purchased from someone who ordered the phone from the US and unlocked it, so the warranty was already voided.

Updating the iPhone 2G to OS 3.1.2

1. Backup the phone

I plugged the iPhone into iTunes and synched the contacts, calendar and music. Using iPhoto I also synched the photos.

2. Update to OS 3.1.2

The update went smoothly and the phone rebooted without problems.

3. iTunes SIM card error

After the reboot, I plugged the iPhone back in and up came a message from iTunes

Crap!!! That should have just worked.

The phone was obviously unlocked when she bought it, but now it needs to be unlocked again.

Unlocking the iPhone 2G, after updating to OS 3.1.2

After turning red with embarrasement and thinking, I hope I can successfully unlock this thing without "bricking" it, I decided to spend some time on blogs and forums to research on how to do this.

Install BlackRa1n RC3

1. Downloaded BlackRa1n: http://blackra1n.com/

2. I plugged the iPhone into the USB port on my MacBook Pro, then started up BlackRa1n and clicked the button, "make it ra1n"

3. The iPhone went into Recovery mode and you will see the same image as on the blackra1n.com website.

4. Blackra1n runs on the iPhone and reboots when its done.

5. I saw a message about donation or whatever.

Give the guy who calls himself "GeoHot" some money if you want to on his website.

Internet Connection

After the reboot, you need to be connected to the internet via WiFi, this is because you need to download and install som programs for the unlocking.

Run BlackRa1n, install ONLY Cydia

1. I tapped on the blackra1n icon on the iPhone, and saw the option to install 2 programs, Cydia and Rock.

2. I clicked on Cydia and it first downloaded and then installed.

BootNeuter - find, install and run

1. After installing Cydia, I went out of blackra1n and tapped on the Cydia icon.

2. Inside Cydia, I used the serach to find the program BootNeuter.

3. Install BootNeuter by clicking on the "Confirm" button at the top right.

4. Close Cydia

5. FInd BootNeuter, tap to open and select the following settings

6. Click on Flash, and DO NOT mess with it until its completely done. (it could take up to 10 minutes)

Reboot the iPhone and enjoy

I unplugged the phone, and rebooted the phone. It came up and searced and found the NetCom network without a problem.

I guess I was lucky this time.
